Despite another epic effort with bat and ball by Jay Darrell Kilve failed, by 9 runs, to beat North Newton last Saturday.

Kilve won the toss and elected to bowl first, on a good looking track. Kilve’s opening attack of Darrell and Clemenson struck early blows dismissing Jenkins for 6 and Gadsby for a duck.

Stone (30) and Sellick (15) set about rebuilding the innings. Broughton with 41 aided by Richardson (14) and Street (27) took North Newton to 172 for 9 from their allotted 45 overs. Darrell finished with 3 for 32 and Clemenson 4 for 38. Button bowled his 3 overs for a miserly 11 runs and Andrew Martin and Gary Stone claimed a wicket each.

After tea Father and Son opening partnership of Edward & Andrew Martin put on 22 for the first wicket. As usual Andrew punished the opening attack, hitting Street for 3 successive fours but the bowler got his revenge with an unplayable lifting delivery which had Andrew caught in the gully for 16.

Jay Darrell joined Martin senior and the pair took the score to 94 before Martin was caught at point for 20. Darrell played a very mature attacking innings striking the ball to all parts of the ground before being caught for an excellent 57. Skipper Carl Clemenson made a brief appearance at the crease but failed to trouble the scorers.

The Kilve middle order looked good but wickets fell at crucial times. Chris James James was caught behind for 11, Cris Taylor went for a solid 19 and Will Munro for 13.

Tight bowling especially from Gavin Kyte (6 for 38) and Richardson’s class leg spin started to slow the run flow. With wickets and overs running out the game had swung in favour of North Newton but some well run singles and a huge six by Roswell brought the game back towards Kilve. Roswell was caught at deep square leg, leaving last man Button joining Peter Stone at the crease to try and get the remaining few runs. A mix up, however, led to Button being run out leaving North Newton victors by 9 runs.
